The Next Casualty - Superman

Did you guys know DC published a story in 1993 that actually featured the death of Superman?  Sounds crazy, right?  I’ve miraculously been able to find a copy of this obscure relic, and have chosen to make it my next series of reviews.  I’d suggest everyone read along, but I realize finding copies of this artifact could be incredibly difficult.

  2. Wow, that newspaper blurb gives Doomsday more character in one sentence than he got in the entire Death of Superman storyline.

  3. I always thought that the first part of Death of Superman was underwhelming compared to the 2nd and 3rd parts, which were pretty interesting as opposed to Knightfall which had an awesome first part and an eh 2nd and 3rd parts (probably because Bane was an awesome villain and Doomsday really wasn't).

I look forward to seeing what you think of DOS compared to Knightfall.

  4. I until recently managed a comic shop that would buy collections, and I'd see Superman #75 on an almost weekly basis, mainly from people who thought '90s comics were "old" and would therefore be valuable. I had to frequently be the bearer of bad news.

  5. I look forward to reading this. I read your Knightfall/quest/end reviews as an observer. This storyline, however, I did read in it's entirety when it originally came out (the only time I was, regularly, reading the Superman books).

j's assessment is pretty spot on. There wasn't much meat to the first act, "Doomsday!". It was, pretty much, a six issue fight scene. Then again, we knew from page one what the ending would be. "Funeral For A Friend" and "Reign Of The Superman!" where much better as stories (even is ROTS seemed to drag on a bit too long). Overall, I did find the entire story quite enjoyable for it's time. Let's see how it holds up after 21 years.

And, yeah, I still have two copies of SUPERMAN #75 in my collection. Had to keep one sealed, you know...
