At CBR, I look back at
Superman: The Animated Series'
"Mxyzpixilated" episode, and the issue of Mark Millar's Superman Adventures that everyone went crazy over.
And, unrelated to anything relating to Superman, aside from the fact that it involves a character with mysterious powers arriving on Earth and helping others, I've been looking back at HBO's short-lived
John from Cincinnati at Gentlemen of Leisure.
I remember meeting Mark Miller at a signing years ago. He told me he loved working on this book, but the job didn't pay well enough for him to continue. Around the same time, he wrote an issue of JLA as a fill-in that still is his only time writing Justice League.
ReplyDeleteAnother fun fact: Miller wrote all those scripts without seeing a single episode of the show, working only with the earliest issues as a guide to the tone of the series. He really surpassed it in places.
Interesting to know. The letter column said the editor had to send him tapes of the series, but I always wondered just how many they had on VHS back then. Millar seemed more interested in Silver Age Superman instead, using the show as kind of a blank canvas to hang those stories on.
ReplyDeleteAnd I wonder if they sent him a VCR or had tapes available in PAL format for him to watch.
DeleteI saw the latest edition of reprints of "Superman Adventures" - they're on volume 4 now, so we're deep into the heyday of his run. It's really kinda magical to see how it worked out so well, even surpassing the show.
