I didn't cover this issue in my CSBG! feature (not a lot to write about in it), but this segment by Pat McCallum and Steve Blackwell is a nice parody of what was going on in this era. Wizard making fun of this stuff instead of just mindlessly promoting it was one of the magazine's redeeming features during these early years.

The Guide to the Guide to Comics Begins
My initial entry in the Comics Should Be Good blog on CBR was posted today. The Guide to the Guide to Comics is my regular feature that examines the early years of Wizard, which should at the very least be interesting. Perhaps not "Spawn rubbing worms all over his face" interesting, but still worth reading, I hope.

WIZARD: SUPERMAN TRIBUTE EDITION - April 1993
1993 Wizard special, hyping the upcoming “Reign of the Supermen” storyline. Notice how earnestly the creators sell the idea that these four characters are the new stars of their respective title. Amazing to think these guys only received two issues in the spotlight before the “Return” storyline began. For more on the special, and lots of material on “Reign of the Supermen” merchandise, check out the excellent Fortress of Baileytude.

WIZARD TRIBUTE TO WOLVERINE - September 1996

This is not the greatest Wizard special devoted to Wolverine, no. This is just a tribute. Tribute to Wolverine is one of the better Wizard specials, with numerous interviews and a comprehensive history of the character, which couldn't have been easy to assemble, even back in 1996. This is an interview with Larry Hama and Bob Harras to promote Wolverine’s brave new direction as Scooby Doo. If you ever wondered what on earth they were thinking, this is what on earth they were thinking.

WIZARD: X-MEN TURN THIRTY - August 1993

The first of many Wizard X-Men specials. Andy Mangels’ article on the ‘90s X-Men cartoon confirmed my suspicions that three different versions of the first two episodes aired on FOX (plus, the third episode had two versions, and the seventh episode originally had a different, non-cliffhanger, ending). You’ve really got to wonder why the producers stuck with Akom even after the show became a massive hit.

WIZARD X-MEN SPECIAL 1999

A roundtable interview with Bob Harras, Mark Powers, and Jason Liebig detailing Marvel’s plans for the X-Men as the new millennium approaches. Watch out for that Y2K bug, you guys! (Scans discovered on Jason Liebig's Flickr page.)
